The history of Social Media has shown on many occasions how they have impacted on the elections of different countries. For example, Facebook had an allegation in the general elections of the USA for releasing the interests of the users of the platform which alerted the globe for submitting proper codes to stay away from the electoral commission's policies.
As general elections in India is on the verge of beginning, the Social media platforms and the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) presented a ‘Voluntary Code of Ethics for the General Election 2019 to the Election Commission of India'.
Things to be done by Social Channels?
The code aims to identify measures that the platforms can take to increase confidence in the electoral process to safeguard against misuse that vitiates the free and fair character of the elections. The platforms will also deploy appropriate policies and processes to facilitate access to information on electoral matters by keeping in min the right to expression.
The platforms have voluntarily undertaken to establish a high-priority communication channel with the nodal officers designated by the Election Commission of India.
The Election commission together with platforms has developed a notification mechanism by which the electoral body can notify them of the potential violations under section 126 of representation of people act. The platforms have to take action on any of the allegations against them within three hours of receipt and will act upon expeditiously based on the nature of the reported violation as per the code provided.
All Social Media platform has to provide high priority dedicated persons for this purpose to the Election Commission of India and also ensure the Advertisements by the political parties and their candidates are properly verified for any illegal influences.
Conclusion
The Election Commission of India is having a keen look on the Social Media platforms for any misutilization from individuals and parties and also ensuring the platforms do not encourage such activities. Hope the 2019 elections will be clean from all unprincipled practices.
